One other part of Gary's teaching involved a discussion about the providence of God. I thought this was particularly insightful and wanted to pass it on to you all. Take some time to read these passages and consider what the writer was experiencing as it related to how God dealt with each situation.
Protection from – Psalm 91 (sometimes God protects us from things/bad situations)
Preservation through – Isaiah 43:1-3a, 5a (sometimes God preserves us through things/bad circumstances)
Presence in – Psalm 23 (sometimes God's presence is felt in the midst of trials and tribulations)
How is God working in your life right now?

God's "presence in" was never more clearly and beautifully displayed to me that when my late father was in the last months of his stage 4 Alzheimers. I had asked God for one more lucid moment. That came and I share with him the glories of heaven from Revelation.
Even though he did not remember the name of his only child son of 55 years, he lifted his hands in worship and said "let's go!" His condition was terminal, but God's "presence in" was not.
It reminds me that, in the words of the hymnwriter, "when I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; bear me through the swelling current, land me safe on Caanan's side", I can count on God's "presence in" to comfort me "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death."
