Work

After God got the ball rolling in the Garden of Eden the Bible says that God put Adam in it to work (page 3 of The Story). As has been pointed out by others throughout the ages, the idea of work comes BEFORE the fall of humankind so we can't link work to sin (Unfortunately I can't seem to convince my 6 year old daughter of this!).

We all have a responsibility to work hard. It's a principle throughout the Bible and we are told in the New Testament to do our work as unto the Lord. In other words - work for an audience of One. The good news is that our worth and value in God's sight do NOT come from what we do. God loves US - not what we do to make a living.

So today many of us are heading off to our respective places of employment. Others will be working from home or in the home. We'll be teaching, practicing medicine or law, driving, researching, studying, serving, cleaning, creating, computing, managing, listening, speaking, training, traveling, etc. How will we do our work?

We'd like to know what kind of work you do. Take a moment and comment about what you enjoy as it relates to your work. What brings you satisfaction? What causes you grief? What vision do you have for improving your work experience? How do you share the love of Christ with those in your workplace?

I don't know if you would call going to school "work", but what I do is pretty darn close. I go to Pitt dental school 5 days a week, 8am to 5pm. I have classes, projects (right now I'm working on making some dentures), observing the older students in the clinic and even helping assist them (like a dental assistant). I have quizzes and tests nearly everyday. The funny thing is I actually PAY THE SCHOOL for the time I spend there. Tuition, fees, books, etc. It's like college but a lot harder and I love it. I wanted to be a dentist so I could create lifelong relationships and have a hand in helping others be happier and healthier people. Do you know anyone who is embarrassed by their teeth? I cannot wait to help give people a brighter, healthier smile- you would not believe the difference it can make for a patient's self-esteem, confidence, and overall ability to laugh and be happy. While at school, I try to be the person God wants me to be, and I know that others have figured out that I'm a religious person because of my attitude, my worldview, and my respect for others. Everyday I get strength from the Lord to face my challenges at school, and I hope to influence others in positive ways.

Well I work as a stay-at-home mom of 2 boys ages 6 & 1. I homeschool my oldest and the youngest likes to show how he is not happy when I don't pay attention to him while doing school with his brother. I also nanny a 6 month old baby 3 days a week. I try to keep the house up and running as we are a very busy family.

I love being home with my boys. I have always wanted to stay at home with my children so this is a dream come true. I love when my children come to me and hug me, give me kisses and tell me they love me. (well at least the oldest does this)

Some days get especially frustrating and I need a lot of peace and the strength of the Lord to get me through them. I need to do devotions more so I am looking forward to this Epic study and hope that will help get me on track.

Well I shard the love of Christ with my children and the little girl I nanny by reading kids Bible stories. My oldest has been really intersted in us reading them to him and now that Epic has started it has encouraged him to want to learn more about Jesus. We have memorized 26 Bible verses and we go over them every day. We pray before school and meals.

I thought I would share Zachary's response when he was reading chapter 1:

He was asking questions out the wazoo and stuff that was like impossible to explain to him. Like "Adam and Eve were the only ones? How did they eat? Where did they shop for food?" He just couldn't get the "thousands of years ago" and they all had kids for generations that became us. He couldn't get the time period and forget the tree of life explanation and the "did they die after they ate the fruit?"

I hope he doesn't go ballistic the next time I offer him FRUIT! ;-)
